Sixty-five percent of female athletes feel that their physical appearance when participating in sport is more heavily scrutinised than that of a man. Those lived experiences of body image scrutiny and pressures are having a knock-on impact, with many young girls not wanting to participate in sport in the first place. It’s why Team GB stars – weightlifter Emily Campbell and gymnast Becky Downie – were in London at the launch of a new event which focused on empowering women in sport.
